approach

This project was one of my first student projects exploring motion design. The assignment was to create a short bumper inspired by a holiday, so I began by studying the visual identity of Hulu and analyzing how its tone and branding could be adapted to a seasonal theme.

I focused on understanding the platform’s color palette, typography, and interface-inspired layout style. From there, I explored how a holiday theme, specifically Christmas, could be integrated into the brand while maintaining visual consistency with Hulu’s existing identity.

challenges

One of the main challenges of this project was the strict time limit of 10 seconds. Working within such a short duration made it difficult to show all the elements I wanted to include without making the sequence feel rushed.

Balancing storytelling, brand consistency, and visual clarity within that timeframe required careful decisions about what to prioritize in the animation. This constraint pushed me to simplify the sequence and focus on the most important visual moments, helping me better understand pacing in motion design.

concept and inspiration

The concept was to create a holiday-themed bumper that still feels authentic to Hulu’s brand. To stay true to the brand guidelines, I maintained the original color palette, typography, and overall design language.

To introduce the festive element, I incorporated visual symbols commonly associated with Christmas, such as snowflakes, Santa hats, and gift icons. I also explored movies available on Hulu that are connected to the holiday season, using that idea to inspire the interface-style layout shown in the sequence.

Design execution

The execution involved designing a storyboard and visual sequence that builds toward the reveal of the Hulu Originals logo. I created interface-inspired frames that simulate a streaming platform layout, gradually introducing holiday icons and festive details.

Throughout the design, I preserved Hulu’s recognizable aesthetic while adding seasonal elements that enhance the narrative of the bumper. The composition, timing, and visual hierarchy were planned to guide the viewer through the sequence in a clear and engaging way within a short duration.
